Ermagherd! Slerndermern!

Happy Friday (about 4 hours early)!

I want you all to welcome Jennifer to Only a Geek! It’s taken a really long time–and a lot of subtle hints–but she finally made it.

Jenn and I have been taking turns playing Slender, a free game by Parsec Productions (a name I’m a huge fan of, by the way) and I have to tell you it’s an intense experience. The game is about as simple a game as I think I’ve ever seen. You play as an unidentified female who has found herself inexplicably in a giant fenced-in wooded area with nothing but the waning light of her flashlight to guide her as she moves through the fog collecting mysterious child-like drawings scattered throughout the area. As soon as you grab the first page (or some time before) the dark and enigmatic presence of the Slender Man (or Slenderman, depending on which wiki you read) begins to hunt you down. His relentless pursuit grows more intense with each page collected and the entire goal of the game is to collect all 8 of the pages before he finds you.

That’s it. No fighting. No puzzles. No health or stamina meter (though your character will run out of breath and your flashlight’s batteries will die). Just you, the pages, and Slender Man.

I can tell you, though, that this formula is absolutely magical in its ability to craft one of the most terrifying games I’ve put myself in front of and Jennifer is of the same opinion.

Putting Jenn into the comic has been an ongoing fear of mine in that I am simply horrible at drawing women of any kind but, now that this is done, I am satisfied and will likely put her in more often. Plus, I plan on having fun with her shirt’s design.

For those wondering about Don’t Wear Flip-Flops and why it’s not making an appearance today, don’t be discouraged. It’s just that DWFF is a much larger production effort than OaG and it will take some time to nail down a rhythm for it and, since I didn’t want to leave you guys empty-handed like I did Wednesday (sorry), I went ahead and did the Slender Man strip, instead. There will be more DWFF, I promise, I just need to figure out a schedule for it.

Well,, that’s about it for now!

Till Monday!

  1. Slendy has hit the internet in a huuuge way. I was discussing with another blogger about the fact that he has now been given a history with people finding accounts of child abductions and placing him as the culprit. It’s weird to see an urban legend being shaped before us.

Good post and welcome to Jenn!

    • I’ll be honest, I don’t know for sure. Myself and Jenn feel the breathing and voice used is distinctly feminine and I read a few comments in reviews and a map drawn by an avid player that stated female.

I admit that it could very well be a male and suppose the point is to have the character’s gender be ambiguous. The post below the comic is my opinion of the game and how I view it. I apologize if my giving the character a gender somehow takes away from your experience, I assure you that was not my intention.

For myself and my fiancée, the player character is female, but you’re absolutely correct that it isn’t stated with certainty anywhere, so, for all intents and purposes, it could be a man or woman, young or old…either way, they never last very long.
